Early modern states often relied on private contractors and suppliers for military logistics, even within highly controlled structures such as bastion forts. This article examines some key actors involved in financial and logisti- cal procedures at the Forte Urbano near Bologna. The depositario managed the fort’s finances; this position was held for long time by the Tanari, an influ- ential family from Bologna. Another important figure was that of the impre- sario, who oversaw the supply of munitions, victuals and retail sales within the fortress, whose procurement contracts are analysed, along with the careers of some impresari of the 17th century.
Keywords: Fortresses, Supplies, Contractors, Forte Urbano (Bologna, Italy).
