This paper argues for the importance of writing and its acquisition in educational practice. Children are already readers before they start school: the sounds of their mother tongue are naturally absorbed as early as the prenatal stage, and further reinforced in the early years through the voices they hear and imitate. Graphemes, however, require explicit instruction, structured learning, and the orthographic encoding of spoken language: a complex process of transcoding from oral to written form. The choice of method and writing style in the initial stages of literacy acquisition is guided by principles of inclusion and accessibility. Cursive writing is introduced gradually and systematically, through slow, deliberate practice – like a dance step performed by the hand. The article concludes with a small-scale, non-representative survey of current and former pupils, exploring whether they still use cursive or have shifted to block letters (print), and their reasons for doing so.
