The article analyses the war rapes occurred during the Operationszone Adriatisches Küsten-land, the Operational Zone of the Adriatic Coast (Ozak) between 1943 and 1945. The pecu-liarities of Ozak and the variety of actors involved in it allow to test historiographical catego-ries linked to gender and processes of memorialisation. Additionally, they allow for the study of rape as a weapon of war in relation to massacres, occupation, and anti-partisan repres-sion. Drawing on a wide range of sources, the article examines the conduct of German units (Wehrmacht and SS), the Caucasian-Cossack contingent and fascist militias to account for the spread of the phenomenon, identifying a periodisation with reference to places and contexts, and investigating specific practices of domination and repression.Key words:gender-based violence, Operationszone Adriatisches Küstenland, Nazism, Fas-cism, Cossacks
