In Cile gli insediamenti informali sono ricominciati a crescere, soprattutto negli ultimi tre anni, dopo decenni in cui erano costantemente diminuiti. A cosa si deve questo improvviso aumento? Molti hanno indicato cause strutturali, come la migrazione o l’aumento dei prezzi degli affitti e degli alloggi. In linea con una letteratura recente sull’informalità urbana, nel presente articolo offriamo una lettura alternativa, attenta alle relazioni con le istituzioni e il sistema politico. Attraverso interviste, revisione di documenti e della stampa, sosteniamo la tesi che l’esplosivo aumento occorso negli ultimi anni è strettamente legato alla crisi sociale e politica causata dalle proteste scoppiate nell’ottobre del 2019.

Al termine della Seconda Guerra Mondiale, Albe Steiner trascorse due anni in Messico insieme a sua moglie Lica e a gran parte della sua famiglia. Nel corso di tale permanenza, tra il 1946 e il 1948, Steiner entrò in contatto con artisti locali come Rivera, Orozco e Siqueiros e prese parte a diverse importanti iniziative. Rimase pure in contatto con i suoi compatrioti, da cui ricevette anche alcuni specifici incarichi. Il presente saggio ne analizza i principali: di fare da corrispondente messicano per Domus e di ottenere la partecipazione ufficiale di Messico e Stati Uniti all’ottava edizione della Triennale di Milano. Nel prendere in esame tale campo dell’attività svolta da Steiner nel corso della sua permanenza all’estero, questo saggio mira inoltre a tracciare la vasta rete transnazionale di contatti coinvolti al fine di adempiere a questi incarichi.

Il contributo intende presentare i danchi giapponesi ripercorrendo le trasformazioni che hanno caratterizzato queste strutture residenziali nell’arco di settant’anni – dal loro sviluppo agli odierni processi di patrimonializzazione – nelle loro forme architettoniche, sociali ed economiche. Il testo si propone di analizzare i danchi mettendoli in relazione con la storia dell’housing in Giappone e rilevandone gli esiti dei processi di trasformazione che li hanno interessati. Particolare attenzione è, dunque, posta all’analisi di come questa eredità moderna nel tempo sia stata percepita dalla collettività.

In this historical moment, the awareness of the ecological emergency involves simplistic debates around trees, forests, woodlands, and in general on greening projects as the best way to improve environmental qualities of cities, peri-urban fringes and fragile contexts. Despite their impact on the modification of territories, the forest’s plantation practices remain mostly detached from territorial and landscape planning disciplines. Understanding the forests as a component of a complex ecosystem should be the fundamental base to develop sustainable designing actions, and studying the vegetal strata can give important indications about ongoing long- term spatial dynamics: how to read these traces and how to manage them for further sustainable reconfiguration of the territories?

Sustainable architecture is a recent paradigm that reclassifies experiences and orients them into a new narrative. It is not always easy to go beyond the ideological and propaganda dimension of the sustainable idea and converting it into an operating parameter in the architectural project is a complicated step. The text proposes the analysis of some notable works and courageous strategies, also applied in developing societies, to lead sustainable mythologies into the bed of architectural design’s technical and political tools. The examples, attempts, and successes of the recent past are not few, and it is crucial to analyze and remember them; it is from them that the resources of an architecture ready to face the challenges of the present come.

This doctoral design-driven research investigates the spatial renewal and urban regeneration of four areas of the case study Eastern fringe of Milan. Each design experimentation focuses on peculiar topics related to urban fringes’ renewal which were selected due to the specificities of each area within the broader urban fringe, which is strongly characterized by the presence of different infrastructures – the Lambro river, the railways and the A51 highway ‘Autostrada Tangenziale Est’. Design approaches illustrated in the following visual essays are based on surveys and datasets; they test design strategies through specific toolkits aimed at enhancing spatial relations and urban quality and reacting to climate change through mitigation and adaptation actions.

The perception of a margin, a limit connected to the urban fringe concept, is recurrent in this paper and observed from different points of view. The ippc 2022 report on climate change states that there is a limit to climate change adaptation, a dynamic threshold that changes according to the ‘health’ of ecosystems. On the other hand, the limit also indicates the physical passage between two conditions, often hybrid, uncertain, and even degraded, but which can represent an opportunity for transition (dynamic concept). This paper describes some strategies (shading systems, vegetation, urban materials) that can overcome physical barriers and improve both the environmental and the fruition conditions of marginal areas.

This contribution analyzes issues and spaces of the architecture for the regeneration of peri-urban areas according to the perspective of the programs to combat the effects of climate change activated by the Green Deal and New European Bauhaus. The contribution aims to highlight how the Taxonomy elaborated by the eu needs a multilayer integration coordinated by a systematization of environmental resources with cultural ones and with the project of territories, as well as how research in architecture can interact and act as a catalyst concerning the objectives set by the European Union. Places of experimentation for a possible taxonomy can be peri-urban areas as catalysts of integrated regeneration processes.

L’interporto di freeeste, a una decina di chilometri dallo scalo marittimo di Trieste e collegato strettamente ai flussi che dal ‘Corridoio Adriatico’ si spingono all’Europa del nord, è uno degli esempi della ‘dispersione’ dell’infrastruttura portuale verso l’interno. A partire dalla dimensione materiale delle traiettorie di espansione del porto, questo articolo indaga i cambiamenti riguardanti non solo le aree costiere, ma anche uno spazio e un tempo estesi e dilatati rispetto al presente. Tali cambiamenti inseriscono Trieste entro più ampi flussi di modificazione e transito, e una storia lunga di trasformazione industriale e produttiva.
