The Syndrome of Samos identifies people who decide to start an enduring romantic relationship with a person affected by a STDs (Sexually transmittable diseases) or with any other condition of physical, social and psychological handicap. The Syndrome usually applies to a HIV negative and informed person who begins a relationship with another person affected by HIV/AIDS infection. Peculiar psychological, social and behavioural features lead the person with the Syndrome to refuse sexual precautions to avoid the contagion with HIV/STDs from the own partner. In some case, early attachment disturbances are found in the Syndrome. Other times, Personality and affective disorders are discovered in the subject with the Syndrome. Moreover, the existence of this Syndrome illustrates that there is an important number of people who would become infected with HIV and other STDs mainly as a result of their own choices and psychological traits. Hence, the importance of its early identification.
