The purpose of this contribution is to highlight a line of research that was already present in the first decades of the rich production of Renzo Canestrari, extremely innovative for that period, and related to the study of mental processes, that today constitute the foundations of cognitive psychology. These works represent an anticipative intuition not only of research fields, but also of empirical and experimental research methodologies associated with the study of the quantitative aspects of mental processes. Of particular importance are the studies on the visual perception of Gestalt imprint, enriched with experimental analyses also often applied to clinical cases. We should also not forget the contribution offered by Canestrari to the psychological study of social changes occurred in the post-war period.
