The psychology of aging emerged after the second World War as an important area of research as well as for clinical interventions. Canestrari understood promptly the importance of this area of psychology and for over 30 years contributed with methodologically robust studies and theoretical propositions to its development at Bologna and in Italy. Several collaborators of Canestrari further investigated relevant issues of the psychology of aging, so that it is now a teaching subject in the degree courses in psychology and a prominent research topic.
