The aim of the article is to show the analytical fruitfulness of Touraine’s work for the study of conflict. It performs this task in two stages: the second section is devoted to how Touraine conceptualizes the labour movement, relating his approach to the historiographic controversies particularly concerning Britain in the 19th and early-20th century; whereas the third section deals with the debate around more recent movements, from the so called new social movements to the mobilizations in various areas of the world during the early decades of our century. In assessing Touraine’s contribution to the study of conflict, however, one cannot ignore the bifurcation of theoretical approaches in this sociological field. Thus in the first section the article considers the competing paradigm, originated in the US, in the study of conflict. It puts forward the argument that it has a unitary character, it highlights the differences with Touraine’s actionalism and also advances a hypothesis on the genealogy of the divergence.
