Aim of the paper is taking into consideration the contribution provided by Alain Touraine’s studies for the construction of a sociology of work organisation. Firstly, the research on the different technological phases carried out at Renault’s Billancourt plant shows the complexity of work organisation as an object of study, showing how, in each single phase, are structured around technology the professional qualification system, the characteristics of the work performed or relationships in the workplace, both those between peers and hierarchical ones, and the social value of work. The more general proposals advanced later with his sociology of action are then useful for an interpretation of the organisation of work as a stake in conflicts. Considering these contributions, the analysis finally focuses on the features of work organisation with information technology.
