This paper aims to re-read the experience of the organized unemployed in Naples in the light of Touraine’s concept of “stakes”. We start to question what is at stake for which the organized unemployed are mobilized and if the movement of the organized unemployed can be considered a “new social movement” in the sense attributed to it by Touraine. After describing the evolution of the cycle of struggles of the organized unemployed that began in the mid-seventies of the last century, we move on to identify the stakes of the mobilizations of the organized unemployed, identifying it in a different representation of themselves as a component of the marginal proletariat and not as “lazars” and in the consequent search for forms of recognition not only on the identity and cultural level but also on the political and trade union level.
Keywords: Naples; Organized Unemployed; Touraine; New social movements.
