The figure of Giacomo Matteotti represented a haunting presence that accompanied the history of Fascism and continued to trouble its successors. On the other hand, in left-wing political culture, Matteotti was for many decades celebrated as a symbol of anti-fascism, the victim of the most notorious political assassination committed by Benito Mussolini’s regime. Recently, however, on the centenary of his death, a number of books have been published offering new historiographical perspectives on his political activity and thought. This review essay aims to explore how these works have shed light on Matteotti’s sharp insight into Fascism as well as on the intellectual depth and consistency of his reformist socialism.
