Recidivism is the phenomenon whereby an individual who has committed a crime tends to reiterate deviant behaviour, despite previous punitive or rehabilitative experiences. In the juvenile context, recidivism takes on a particularly delicate dimension, as young people are in a crucial phase of psychological and social development. Factors such as the family context, traumatic experiences, the ability to process internal conflicts and social support can significantly impact on the likelihood of reoffending. In Italy, the juvenile legal system aims at combining justice and rehabilitation, trying to intervene on the risk of reoffending with personalised approaches and reintegration programmes, to foster the positive reintegration of the juvenile into society. The psychological and psychodynamic analysis of these phenomena is essential to understand the roots of criminal behaviour and to develop targeted and effective interventions. The aim of this research was to analyse which intrapsychic dynamics (e.g. emotional regulation deficits, poor impulse control, executive function deficits, sense of self-efficacy, defence mechanisms, etc.) and interpersonal dynamics (e.g. past experiences of violence, quality of family relationships, characteristics of the growth context, etc.) can predict the risk of reoffending in a sample of 30 young people (average age = 18.20; SD = 2.06), comparing who committed violent crimes (56.7%) and who committed non-violent crimes (43.3%).
