Within a wider campaign conducted by centrist governments against local autonomies governed by the left, hundreds of civic administrators were involved in judicial or administrative proceedings due to their active involvement in demonstrations and peace initiatives. The paper looks at the decade starting in 1947, with the expulsion of the left from the national government, from the perspective of the attack on local autonomies, carried out, with in an anti-communist agenda, with the fundamental contribution of prefects. The paper provides the first quantitative overview of the phenomenon and relies on records from the Ministry of the Interior covering all provinces of Italy, with an in-depth analysis of nine of them.
Keywords: Italian Communist Party, mayors, local governments, State, local autonomies
