Social agriculture (SA) is closely connected to social work, which, since its origins, has explored the interplay between social well-being and the environment. Today, sustainability is a central pillar of the 2020-2030 Global Agenda. In Italy, the 2020 Code of Ethics emphasizes the responsibility toward environmental protection. In this context, social agriculture emerges as a promising new frontier for social work practice. Although projects oriented towards environmental justice that link these two dimensions have begun to emerge, the debate in Italy remains less developed than in the international context, and there is a lack of robust historical analysis. This contribution aims to fill this gap by reconstructing Italian experiences over the past century and adopting the frameworks of eco-social work and community social work, with a focus on multi-professional collaborations in rural areas. The guiding hypothesis is that social work and social agriculture share a common epistemological foundation.
Keywords: social agriculture; environmental sustainability; evolution of social work practices; eco social work; community social work.
