The article examines Italy’s response to the oil crisis in the years 1973-1974, with particular attention to how the country sought to reconcile its national energy interests with the evolving framework of the European Community and the demands of the United States related to the newly established International Energy Agency (IEA). It argues that the crisis served as a catalyst not only for the evolution of energy policy, but also led to a broader redefinition of Italy’s international position.
