The article traces the evolution of Olympic boycotts throughout the twentieth century, before turning to the emergence of the diplomatic boycott at the Beijing 2022 Winter Games. The case shows how this “low-intensity” form of contestation both reflects and shapes shifts in the international order, functioning as a tool through which the legitimacy, practices, and political meanings of the Olympic and broader global arena are redefined.
