The article aims to trace the origins of scientific anti-racism in post-war Italy by looking at the history of social sciences. To do so, I reconstruct the first collaborations of Italian social psychologists and cultural anthropologists – dating back to the early 1960s – in UNESCO’s anti-racist projects, drawing in particular on archival sources relating to their activities at the UNESCO Youth Institute in West Germany. In doing so, I attempt to historicize the characteristics of the new anti-racist epistemology, tracing its disciplinary roots in US social sciences and identifying its first applications in Italy.
Keywords: anti-racism, UNESCO, social sciences
