For more than a year, the Ministry of Education and Merit has enacted top-down interventions on the teaching of history in schools. The public debate that followed the publication of the “New Guidelines 2025 for Preschool and Primary Education: Materials for Public Debate”, on 11 March 2025, focused largely on the pages of the document devoted to “History”. The approach to the knowledge and teaching of this subject appears to convey a nostalgic and anachronistic view of the discipline and historical research. As a journal, we feel compelled to keep the spotlight on the teaching of history, recognising it as a crucial issue due to its cultural, social, political, as well as institutional implications. We have therefore invited representatives of some of the academic associations — engaged on this issue through a variety of initiatives — to reflect on the key points of this debate. This roundtable hosts Giorgio Caravale (president of the Italian Society for Modern History - Sisem), Marco de Nicolò (president of the Italian Society for the study of contemporary history - Sissco), Vinzia Fiorino (president of the Italian Society of Women Historians - Sis) and Marco Meriggi (former president of the Italian Society for the Study of the History of Institutions - Sissi). Furthermore, the discussion features the participation of Enrico Acciai (president of the Teaching Commission of the Ferruccio Parri National Institute).
