This article shows how Montecatini applied the new training techniques coming from the United States ("Training Within Industry") in the 1950s. After the description of the Milanese company’s adaptations, the paper analyses the case study of the first Italian petrochemical industry, that was built in 1950 in Ferrara. This case shows that there was not just a simple mechanical import of American methods, but Montecatini was able to move cautiously and to modify the original theories, according to its needs. Precisely the training of intermediate level managers allowed Montecatini to build a consensus system that lasted for many years. The article concludes with an examination on the changes that were already emerging at the beginning of 1960’s.
