Il gioco rappresenta per il bambino un’attività fondamentale per la sua crescita; in particolare, quello con le costruzioni, sembra avere un ruolo rilevante per lo sviluppo cognitivo del bambino. Al fine di comprenderne la reale efficacia, numerosi studi sono stati condotti indagandone i vari aspetti in relazione a differenti abilità cognitive. Una prima area di studi riguarda la relazione tra gioco con le costruzioni e abilità visuo-spaziali, una seconda ne esamina la relazione con la matematica, una terza area mette in relazione il gioco con le costruzioni, le abilità visuo-spaziali, l’intelligenza numerica - nelle sue diverse componenti - e le immagini mentali. Tali studi lasciano presupporre che il gioco con le costruzioni rappresenti un importante strumento ludico ed educativo con elevate capacità per il potenziamento dello sviluppo cognitivo complessivo e di specifiche abilità, quali quelle matematiche. Questa rassegna narrativa propone dunque una revisione sistematica delle evidenze empiriche presenti in letteratura per tentare di comprenderne la reale efficacia. In un periodo storico in cui i device informatici stanno gradualmente sostituendo il gioco manuale che da sempre ha accompagnato lo sviluppo umano, conoscere lo stato dell’arte su questo importante ambito di ricerca potrebbe rappresentare uno spunto di riflessione al fine di rivedere la programmazione scolastica basata sul possibile ritorno a specifiche attività ludiche manuali finalizzate al potenziamento cognitivo e di specifiche abilità scolastiche.
