Recent papers have highlighted how many of the major urban ambits in Italy are undergoing a new phase of demographic growth. The occurrence of this phenomenon in a decade when the foreign resident population has tripled is not a coincidence. The authors first retrace the evolution of 8 Italian urban ambits during the last sixty years and then analyze the key contribution of foreigners and international migration to the population dynamics of those urban ambits during the last decade.
