The paper presents six geographical interpretations of the Milan urban area and ascribes them to two distinct scientific paradigms: one named "functional", that practices a deductive approach, and one named "spatial", that practices an inductive approach. It is found that some "urban entities" are recognised by both paradigms; and that provincial/metropolitan (NUTS-3) administrative borders do not match with any of the analytical interpretations of the urban area.
