This paper presents a synopsis of ongoing debate within the IPA about "remote analysis", including the use of telecommunications in training analyses in strictly limited circumstances. It was written in early 2016, following discussions at the 2015 congress in Boston and in anticipation of the 2017 congress in Buenos Aires. In January 2016 the IPA President had written to all IPA members and candidates to remind them of current IPA policy. Topics addressed in the paper include: what led to this communication; the relation between the IPA policy on remote analysis in training and the growing practice by some psychoanalysts of offering online psychoanalytic consultation and treatment; whether the underlying issues are yet being adequately and properly discussed, and if not why not.
Keywords: Remote analysis, training analysis, IPA
