According to recent data from the Department of Penitentiary Administration, in Italy approximately 70% of prisoners who have not carried out training or work activities during their period of imprisonment return to crime once their sentence has been served, where the recidivism rate is significantly reduced for those who have been included in professional learning and training circuits. Referring to an ongoing research project financed by Sapienza University of Rome – whose scope is to analyze critical issues and best practices relating to italian projects in a comparative perspective –, this essay presents the first empirical evidences that arise from the interpretation of data provided by the Department of the Italian Penitentiary Administration regarding the situation of prison population in its multiple stratifications and the implementation of learning and professional training projects in penitentiary institutions.
Keywords: prison; training; work; reintegration; recidivism.
