The Nature Restoration Law debate is an opportunity to reflect on the meaning of river restoration, intended not as a return to the past but as a search for new balances, and on the role that historical knowledge of the landscape can play in guiding its management today. The case study reconstructs the transformations of a highly man-made agricultural landscape, as part of a River Contract that aims to restore the ecological quality of the river and its territory.

Keywords: landscape; ecological restoration; river landscapes; historical investigation; river contract.
