The war in Gaza, following the pogrom perpetrated by Hamas on October 7 against the Jewish civilian population in Israel, had psychological effects on the communities in Europe and the USA that deserve attention from psychoanalytic reflection. The unleashing of anti-Semitism, perhaps unprecedented in its diffusion and intensity in modern times, tolerated and fueled by the masses, seems to represent the main effect of this historical event on the collective psyche. The thesis explored in the article is that the resurgence of anti-semitism, comparable to a previously more hidden karst river, was facilitated by the cathartic effects of the pogrom. The absence of an adequate processing of guilt for the Holocaust by the perpetrators would have led to the encystment of a persecutory guilt that had not evolved into depressive guilt.
Keywords: anti-semitism, holocaust trauma, persecutory guilt and depressive guilt, collective psychology, cathartic effects.
