Through a rereading of American Pastoral (1997) by the American writer Philip Roth, the article explores some themes which are very topical: trauma, family, society and parenthood. The life of the novel’s protagonist Seymourn Levov, known as the Swede, is subverted and, along with that, that of the entire family, following the terrorist act by his doughter, the explosion of a bomb in a post office, which will cause the death of an innocent. Every belief, every dream, every ideal, will blow up along with the post office building, turning beliefs that seemed indestructible upside down.

Keywords: trauma, family, society, parentalhood, border.
