ADHD currently represents a complex and articulated syndromic framework, probably multifactorial in a pathogenetic as well as descriptive dimension. The aim of this contribution is to consider, in the light of current scientific knowledge, the role of attachment and traumatic experience in the genesis of pathology. The further purpose is to find the way through which, from a cognitive perspective, the child first, the adolescent then, and finally the adult arrives at the construction of personal meaning, with the aim of more functional intervention strategies. In this paper, some clinical cases will be presented to exemplify the contents of the proposed reflections. The specificity of our contribution lies in its prospective and prognostic elements. We emphasise the relevance of life history, particularly traumatic attachments, in identity construction and psychopathological development. We invite therapists not to focus exclusively on performance and control deficits in their treatment strategies.
