The article examines the crisis of 1973-74 and its impact on the global economy. It had severe consequences on the most advanced societies, causing a caesura in economic and monetary policies with serious repercussions in society as a whole. Italy is in line with this trend: it represents one of the most evident cases of the end of an era. The oil crises and the end of the Bretton Woods agreements are added to the expansion of the technologies of the Third Industrial Revolution. This process changes the industrial, employment and social structure of Italy.
