This article presents considerations that highlight the importance of the dimension of “emptiness” as key factor in adolescent experience, linked on the one hand to the developmental needs and, at the same time, a condition that can lead to the adoption of reparative and “self-healing” attitudes. It thus presents a transnosographic dimension with respect to psychopathological manifestations. It then explores the frameworks of adolescent development constituted by the quality of family relationships, and in particular transgenerational family histories, which are attributed with the role of both bond and resource with respect of development. Finally, it focuses on the implications of this conceptual framework for building the therapeutic alliance with the adolescent and his or her family.

Keywords: adolescence, dimension of emptiness, transgenerational transmission, therapeutic alliance.
