Climate change can provoke strong and varied emotional reactions. These emotions may either encourage or diminish the willingness to act and participate in different ways and forms, to counteract climate change. However, little research has examined the relationship between emotional reactions and various forms of participation, including online participation. Even less attention has been given to the emotions that participation itself can elicit. The aim of this qualitative study is therefore to explore, through 10 focus groups in Italy (96 participants), the emotional reactions climate change provokes and how these interact with engagement to counteract it, while also considering the emotional impact that pro-environmental engagement has on the focus group participants.
