Milton Erickson used proverbs in his clinical practice to convey therapeutic messages in shared experience-based language. This article of a paremiological type offers a description of the historical origins, sources and gnomics of the proverb, its geographical spread and the analysis of the linguistic structure that underlies it: the metaphor. The article investigates the symbolic meaning of the proverb with reference to cognitive theories, neuroscience, theory of mind and Jungian archetypes and focuses on its use in ericksonian clinical practice.
