In Italy, the ‘Prison University Poles’ are complex structures created with the aim of promoting educational opportunities, social justice and well-being for pris-oners and the community, and to contrast stereotypes and prejudices on the pris-on, through the three missions of the University. Based on the experience of the University of Calabria, the contribution analyses the virtuous outcomes of the ac-ademic engagement in prison and the critical issues that remain uncovered.
