This historiographical review critically reflects on the renewed attention on the theme of labour in the Italian historiographical debate and discusses recent national and international research perspectives. The first part explores recent syntheses in Labour History in contemporary Italy. Particular attention is devoted to the periodisation, methods and findings proposed by Fabrizio Loreto and Stefano Gallo in “Storia del lavoro nell’Italia contemporanea” (il Mulino, 2023). The final section looks at the nexus between structural weaknesses and ongoing emergencies of the work domain and the peculiarities of the Italian context, investigating the usefulness of a trans-local approach to the study of labour and the dynamics of transformation in contemporary Italian society.
Keywords: Labour History, contemporary Italy, historiography, trade unions
