In contemporary cities certain places stand out for their potential as elements of social infrastructure. Cultural and recreational facilities as well as commercial establishments support residents’ everyday activities at a local, proximitybased scale. In doing so, they contribute to foster the development and maintenance of social interactions, preserve the neighbourhood’s historical memory, and enable forms of local solidarity to emerge. This article seeks to explore some of the places that may play a role in supporting proximity, accessibility, and social cohesion on the backdrop of the profound urban transformations underway in the Mooca district.
