Taking the cue from the early publications of the Italian psychiatrist Silvano Arieti, the essay focuses on the development of his epistemological reflection between the forties and the fifties, until the publication of the first edition of Interpretation of Schizophrenia (1955). It comes out a reflection characterized by the combination of several scientific and cultural suggestions, in the light of an integration between nomothetic and idiographic approaches, with one of its main reference points in the field of psychosomatics.

Keywords: Silvano Arieti, history of psychiatry, anti-reductionism, complementarity, integrative approach, nomothetic and idiographic approaches, psychosomatics.
