The article investigates the relationships between tourism policies (and the forms of urban planning they stimulate) and contemporary tourism-related territorial transformations in Southern Italy from post-World War II to the period of the European Cohesion Policy until 2020. The contribution is structured in two parts: one, concerning the response of Southern Italy to the different patterns of fruition suggested by tourism policies from the 1950s to the present; the other, concerning the proposals for tourism envisaged by local development policies for the Grecanica Area, the southern edge of Ionian Calabria. In conclusion, we reflect on the growing lack of capacity to establish a fruitful and convergent relationship between tourism planning and its territorial spillovers
