The article examines the evolution of labour and social conflicts, with a particular focus on the thought of Alain Touraine. Conflicts, which are key elements in social development, vary according to the societal model: industrial, post-industrial, national, or institutional. Labour, once central to workers’ consciousness and social movements, has lost its historically prominent position, reflecting the decline of the Left, which struggles to address new post-industrial realities. Democracy emerges as the sole pathway to reconcile social diversity and cohesion; however, the Left’s crisis, marked by division and weakness, is exacerbated by the rise of populist movements and the erosion of historical ideals. In light of these reflections, the article highlights the process of renewing the left through new social movements, advocating for a balance between social needs, environmental concerns, and individual identities.
