This paper provides insights into the figure of Alberto Magnaghi as scientific coordinator of the Apulia regional landscape plan. It focuses on the importance of the ‘territorialist’ approach to bring new meaning to territorial planning in a southern Italian region, on Magnaghi’s ability to link research and action dissolving the dilemma of scientific rigour or relevance, and on the generative potential of the planning process thanks to his original mix of utopian vision and pragmatism.

Keywords: Alberto Magnaghi; regional landscape planning; self-sustainable local development; knowledge and action; Apulia.
