This contribution examines the essential elements of bioregionalism and highlights how this orientation has been differently interpreted in the Italian context, according to the territorialist approach of Magnaghi and its School. The most significant contributions are considered with attention to how they have prefigured a radical alternative to the dominant development model and the relationships with some influential currents of thought, which in turn have measured themselves with the regionalist tradition.

Keywords: bioregion; territory statute; active society; partecipation; social autoorganization; new form of planning.
