Multidisciplinary psychotherapeutic interventions in families facing disability

In psychotherapeutic practice and within a multidisciplinary rehabilitative framework, the systemic-relational model offers a comprehensive lens for understanding families affected by disability. It recognizes the unique intrapersonal and interpersonal responses of each family member to the challenges posed by disability. Multidisciplinary collaboration enables the development of interventions across multiple levels, focusing on the patient’s psychological strengths and functional capacities while respecting their individuality within the family context. This integrated approach supports families in processing both individual and collective trauma, navigating experiences of loss, and fostering creative, compensatory solutions that promote rehabilitation. This process opens pathways to resilience, helping restructure behavioural and relational patterns, enhance self-awareness, and deepen understanding of the illness. By uncovering internal and external resources, therapy contributes to improved quality of life for each family member. Resilience, cultivated through therapeutic engagement, supports adaptation to new conditions, reduces stress, and sustains mental well-being. Ultimately, therapy fosters personal growth within an inclusive framework, empowering individuals to connect, contribute, and maintain psychological integration and generativity.
