The article “In the Footsteps of the Depths: Weiss, Bernhard and the Two Souls of Psychoanalysis”explores the role of Edoardo Weiss and Ernst Bernhard in establishing depth psychology in Italy, highlighting the dialogue and tension between the Freudian and Jungian orientations. It examines how Weiss, Freud’s first direct disciple in Italy, introduced orthodox psychoanalysis into the Italian cultural context, while Bernhard, who arrived in Rome in the 1930s, brought with him the Jungian approach, fostering both confrontation and cross-pollination between the two traditions. The article emphasizes how their collaboration and contrasts gave rise to a “double soul” of Italian psychoanalysis: on one side, the rigorous Freudian orthodoxy; on the other, the symbolic and cultural openness of Jungian thought. Within this interplay lie the origins of depth psychology in Italy, which developed beyond disciplinary boundaries, intertwining science, philosophy, and culture.
