This review article analyses recent trends of the history and historiography of work in Italy, moving from the book “Storia del lavoro nell’Italia contemporanea” by Stefano Gallo and Fabrizio Loreto (il Mulino, 2023). The essay broadens the debate by incorporating methodologies that are characteristic of global labour history, and themes such as the feminisation of work and sexual work, cognitive work, the exploitation of VAT workers, and social movements for non-work. Internal, cross-border and postcolonial workforce mobility allows us to rethink the borders of Italian labour history.
