This article proposes a re-examination of financial mentoring as an innovative approach for treating Gambling Disorder, highlighting its therapeutic, socio-educational, and psychological value. In cases where financial literacy alone proves insuffi cient given the complexity of a patient’s cognitive, emotional, and relational dynamics, the intervention takes the form of re-education on money management – a transformative process aimed at rebuilding management skills, decision-making abilities, and symbolic meanings.
Working in collaboration with the patient, their family, and the therapeutic team, the mentor helps monitor financial resources, plan debt resolution, and avoid dynamics of substitution or overprotection, all to restore a functional relationship with money, with a focus on autonomy and personal responsibility.
The experience of the Department of Pathological Addictions at ASL Napoli 2 Nord demonstrates the effectiveness of integrating psychoeducational interventions – specifi cally financial mentoring – with debt relief programs carried out through partnerships with Third Sector organizations.
This approach presents a multidimensional model in which the financial aspect serves as both a therapeutic lever and an opportunity for personal and familial reorganization for the patient.
