The following article intends to present a new clinical tool, to be used for the assessment of both couple functioning and some personality aspects of individual partners: the Couple Tree Drawing. It is a procedure that is both interactive and projective, and is particularly useful in the early stages of consultation, but can also be used in the later stages of therapy or in the final stages, to qualitatively assess the effectiveness of treatment. The procedural aspects of the tool will be presented, in order to guide towards its correct application, and an outline useful to the therapist for clinical interpretation will be provided. Finally, two clinical examples will help to better understand its application and, in conclusion, some ideas for future research developments in the field of couples therapy will be discussed.
Keywords: couple therapy, joint drawing, interactive techniques, projective techniques, non verbal, videofeedback.
