This paper explores the role of large-format group-analytic experiential devices – median groups and Large Groups – in contemporary psychotherapy training. Starting from the scenario of hypermodern societies and the crisis of traditional forms of clinical knowledge transmission, it is argued that complexity epistemology and the group-analytic tradition converge in requiring training devices that operate through experiential immersion rather than accumulation of codified knowledge. Drawing on Large Group theory (De Maré, Kreeger), the concept of the social unconscious (Hopper and Weinberg), and Kaës’s reflection on the extension of psychoanalysis, the paper contends that large-format groups are elective instruments for accessing dimensions of psychic life – the social unconscious, the institutional field, citizenship dynamics – that remain largely unthinkable within the small group. The interplay between different group formats creates a formative microcosm in which future psychotherapists can develop the reflexive and complex stance here defined as “knowing how to do” in contemporary clinical practice.
