The Republican authorities made extensive use of irregular warfare techniques during the Spanish Civil War, training thousands of anti-fascist guerrillas (both Spanish and foreign volunteers). Building on the biographical histories of these men, the aim of this article is to understand whether it is correct to assume that the Spanish conflict acted as a matrix with respect to the spread of irregular warfare practices first in the years of the Second World War and then in those of the first Cold War, gener¬ating global ramifications of which the veterans of Spain would be the driving force.
