The main aim of this study was to verify the effectiveness of Storytelling Thinking® in the treatment of patients with Gambling Disorder (GD). Particularly, this study focused on how this tool can improve the decision-making process, supporting adaptive and self-control behaviors that favor the identification of goals and the projection into the future in a more realistic way. The study involved 30 subjects, divided into a treatment group, which received the Storytelling Thinking® intervention, and a control group. All participants completed the South Oaks Gambling Screen (SOGS), the Barratt Impulsiveness Scale (BIS-11) and the Consideration of Future Consequences (CFC-14) questionnaires at baseline and after two weeks (upon completion of the intervention for the treatment group). In the treatment group, the analyses revealed a suggestive increase of the mean CFC-14 scores (although not statistically significant) one week after the last session. Additionally, a weakly positive correlation between the severity of the GD and the changes over the time (∆T) of the CFC-14 scale was observed. This suggests that the proposed treatment is more effective the more severe the gambling disorder. In conclusion, the use of narrative techniques focused on the future dimension and on awareness of decision-making seems to show potential in the treatment of GD.
