International migrations are systemic processes dominated by the transformative impact of cultural contexts on the life conditions and identity of migrants. The impact is observed primarily on children and adolescents thrown out of their former world. Uprooting generates in the migrant subject an abrupt existential problem, triggered by the loss, or disbanding of the person’s psychic and cultural containers (i.e. parental figures, languages, worldviews) that supported and protected the development of the migrant person. Thrown into a foreign world, the person’s personality structure becomes exposed and vulnerable to sudden and uncontrollable changes, lack ing operative adaptation mechanisms that help to cope with the dearth of their primary containers. The traumagenic power of migration disrupts both external and internal (somatic, psychic and social) subjective homeostasis of the person, causing identity alterations with unpredictable outcomes.
