Quarterly journal of study and debate for the dissemination of evaluation culture in Italy by the Italian Evaluation Association
The Italian Evaluation Review (RIV) aims to raise the level of evaluation debate in Italy by promoting dialogue between the various disciplinary and professional strands of evaluation. It aims to stimulate scientific reflection by identifying the most significant elements in each area of the complex world of evaluation, with a view to advancing general reflection. This includes both promoting the comparison of approaches, theories and methods, and sharing evaluative research experiences carried out in Italy and abroad.
Secondly, the RIV aims to promote dialogue between evaluators, public administration, and the profit and non-profit sectors. The RIV addresses issues that are currently at the heart of the process through which evaluation is becoming established in the public, private and third sectors: the objectives and functioning of public institutions with evaluative purposes, the role of evaluation units, the ethical framework and established methodological practices for programme evaluation, the definition of quality standards and accreditation and evaluation systems, the evaluation market, the institutionalisation of evaluation processes and other crucial issues for the development of an evaluation culture in the country.
The contents and ideas expressed by the authors do not necessarily reflect those of the Italian Evaluation Association or its Management and Editorial Committees, which aim to guarantee an open space for different orientations and approaches, provided they are scientifically argued and do not conflict with the principles contained in the Association's Code of Ethics.
Throughout its history, RIV has been characterised by a significant capacity for renewal. Founded in 1996 in Perugia as an exclusively electronic journal, initially distributed on floppy disk and later made available online, between 2001 and 2002 it was published in paper format with the sponsorship of the AIV. Today, RIV is owned by the AIV and published by FrancoAngeli. Starting with the first issue of 2026, the magazine is available online in open access.
